Meck. Co. Lays Out Plan To Bring MLS Team To Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, NC– Mecklenburg County is laying out the plan to build a new stadium in the Elizabeth neighborhood in hopes of landing a Major League Soccer franchise for Charlotte.
Demolishing Memorial Stadium and building a new facility will cost $175 million. The city and county would each pay $43.7 million. An ownership group headed by Marcus Smith will cover the remaining $87.5 million.
The county says the deal will not stand in the way of other potential projects, like a push to increase the seating capacity for a new stadium at the Sportsplex in Matthews.
Mayor Taylor says they hope to have 6,000 seats at the sportsplex stadium.
Mecklenburg County is hosting a public forum next Tuesday to discuss the MLS stadium proposal.
