CHARLOTTE, NC — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has released the dash cam video from the fatal 2012 officer involved shooting of Michael Laney.
On January 24th, North Carolina Superior Court Judge Lisa C. Bell ordered the department to release the video. Family members have maintained that the shooting was unnecessary, while CMPD and the District Attorney say that the officer involved was justified in his actions.

According to reports, on July 2, 2012 officers spotted Laney riding a red scooter along Beatties Ford Road that matched the description of the suspect and vehicle involved in an armed robbery on June 25, 2012 in which the victim was shot. Laney jumped off the scooter and ran towards a home on Crestview Drive, according to reports, when officers attempted to pull him over.
Officers Anthony Holzhauer and Officer Ryan Shields caught up with Laney in the front yard of the home and a struggle ensued, officials say. As officers tried to arrest him, detectives say Laney reached for a gun in his waistband and Officer Holzhauer fired his service weapon.
Laney was pronounced dead at the scene.
The District Attorney later determined that Officer Holzhauer was justified in the shooting.
Officer Holzhauer, who has been with CMPD since January 2010, and Officer Shields, since January 2009, remain with the department.
