School Custodian Charged with Indecent Liberties After Undercover Operation

BURKE COUNTY, N.C. —  A school custodian from Burke County was charged with two counts of indecent liberties with a child and one count of solicitation of a child by computer following an undercover operation by the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.

The operation was conducted after it was learned that the man in question, Timothy Matthew Shelnut, was having inappropriate conversations with a minor through social media.

Shelnut is accused of traveling to a predetermined location where believed he would meet up with the minor to perform sexual acts.

However, upon arrival, Shelnut was taken into custody by investigators and was confined at the Burke Catawba District Confinement Facility under a $5,000 secured bond.

Shelnut was a custodian at East Burke Middle School.  Officials say he has been terminated from his position and that the incident did not happen on school grounds.
