Woman Facing Charges After Pedestrian Hit And Killed

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Β — A woman is facing charges after police say she hit and killed a pedestrian in north Charlotte.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit conducted an investigation after a womanΒ was struck and killed by a vehicle while walking on the sidewalk.

On Friday, February 3, 2017, at 12:59 p.m., officers responded to a crash involving a pedestrian at 1501 N. Tryon Street.Β  Medic transported the pedestrian, Doris Ballard, to Carolinas Medical Center-Main with life threatening injuries, while the driver and witnesses were interviewed at the scene.Β  A short time later, Ballard died as a result of her injuries sustained in the crash, according to news release.

Police say the preliminary investigation shows that Ballard was walking on the sidewalk along N. Tryon Street in front of the 7-Eleven at 1501 N. Tryon Street. Β The driver, Royalty Gaten, was operating a 2004 Ford Expedition SUV.Β  As Gaten started to exit the parking lot, her vehicle struck Ballard, according to police.

Detectives have charged Gaten, with Misdemeanor Death by Vehicle; however, speed and alcohol impairment were not contributing factors in the crash.Β  The incident remains under investigation.
