Carjacking Suspect Leads Police On Chase, Crashes Into K-9 Unit

BOONE, NC — Police have arrested the suspect who carjacked a woman and then led officers on a high speed chase before crashing into a Lenoir PD K-9 vehicle early Monday morning.

Tommy Long, 19, of Taylors, SC, pulled a woman from her car at the Holiday Inn Express on Blowing Rock Road around 7:30am, according to police. After failing to stop for Blowing Rock Police, officers say Long led them on a high speed chase down Highway 321 towards Lenoir. NC State Highway Patrol, Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office, and Lenoir Police also joined the pursuit.

Shortly after 8am, police say Long lost control while trying to avoid stop sticks and crashed into a Lenoir PD K-9 cruiser that was parked in the median. Long tried to run, but officers say he was quickly apprehended.

The two officers in the patrol car were taken to a local hospital for evaluation, and officials say they were treated and released a short time later. Officials also say neither the K-9 in the patrol car nor Long were injured in the accident.

Long is charged with Felonious Common Law Robbery, Felonious Possession of a Stolen Vehicle, Misdemeanor Assault on a Female, and Felonious Speeding to Elude Arrest. Police say Long has more charges pending from Lenoir Police Department.
