Suspect Who Shot Himself During A SWAT Standoff Tuesday Has Died

GASTONIA, N.C. — The suspect who shot himself after a six hour standoff with police Tuesday afternoon has died.

Officials say officers went to the home on Scott Drive around 6:30am to serve warrants related to sex crime charges. Officers say the suspect threatened to hurt any law enforcement that tried to arrest him.

Around 8:30am, the suspect opened the door with a pistol at his side, according to reports. This prompted a standoff that would last six hours.

SWAT was called to the scene while negotiators attempted to talk the suspect into surrendering. Officers say they eventually deployed tear gas and flash bangs in order to enter the home.

Gaston County Police say the suspect shot himself once officers entered, and was quickly transported to CaroMont Regional Medical Center. He was pronounced dead Tuesday evening.

According to Captain Curtis Rosselle with GCPD, officers never fired their weapons and no officers were injured during the incident.

The suspect’s name has not been released.
