High Country Braces for More Snow & Below Zero Wind Chills

BOONE, NC – Across the High Country, people are preparing for a bitter freeze.

“Bundle up, make sure that we have food in the house. Have lots of blankets,” says Marlena Atchley.

She’s gearing up for her first Winter Storm in Boone.

“I’m not used to this weather quite yet. Uh, we just moved here so it’s definitely different,” Atchley says.

Up to three inches of snow is expected overnight, but forecasters are also predicting bone chilling temperatures with wind chills as low as 10 below zero by Wednesday.

There could be wind gusts up to 50 miles an hour.

“It’s gonna come either way today so we’ll just deal with it and go on,” says Boone resident Jonathan Perry.

Snow plows rolled through downtown Boone Tuesday evening.

“Any snow that falls will freeze probably, more than likely,” explains Kevin Whittington with NCDOT.

He says crews will be working all night.

“As conditions warrant we’ll be putting out salt… or whatever the need might be,” he says.

The cold weather didn’t seem to affect everyone.

Brooks Hastings and Alexis Leppard says after what’s been a mild Winter in Boone, they’re glad to see the white stuff.

“It’s been a lot less snow than normal. Last year, I think we were out of school like 18 days. And this year, I think it’s been like five,” Hastings says.
