CHARLOTTE, NC – The N.C. Department of Transportation will start a project this weekend to give motorists a smoother ride on I-77 between Tyvola Road and the South Carolina line. The project also includes improvements to seven bridges along the corridor.
Crews will start patching operations at 8 p.m. Sunday, March 26, weather permitting, in preparation for resurfacing northbound lanes, starting at the state line. Lane and ramp closures will be restricted to overnight hours to minimize impacts to traffic.
Later this spring, work will shift to cleaning and painting structural steel, as well as applying an epoxy overlay to the bridge decks at these locations:
- I-77 North and South at Westinghouse Boulevard;
- I-77 North and South over Sugar Creek;
- I-77 North and South at Arrowood Road; and
- Ramp bridge from I-77 North to the I-485 Inner Loop
Blythe Construction, Inc. was awarded the $11.4 million contract last year. The project is scheduled to be completed Sept. 30.
Drivers are encouraged to slow down when approaching the work zone, and to pay extra attention to construction and detour signs.
