RALEIGH, NC — On Tuesday, Rep. Bill Brawley filed a bill that would give Matthews and Mint Hill the power to apply for and operate charter schools.
House Bill 514, according to a release, would allow for the submission of an application to establish public charter schools, which would then be run by the municipality and provide enrollment preference to local residents.
βThis bill is in response to a request from municipal officials for this legislation, and Iβm pleased to submit this bill today,β said Rep. Brawley.Β βIn 2015, Matthews began exploring educational opportunities beyond those proposed by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.Β At the time, I stated that if Matthews came up with a reasonable proposal to improve educational outcomes for their children, I would run the bill.
βThe Town of Matthews has submitted that proposal, and I am happy to fulfill my promise.Β This bill would simply allow parents who are residents of Matthews or Mint Hill the opportunity to send their children to charter schools operated by their respective towns if the towns choose to offer them.β
