Changes Coming to I-77 Work Zone

CHARLOTTE, NC – State Traffic Engineer Kevin Lacy and Work Zone Traffic Control Engineer Steve Kite have completed a review of the I-77 express lanes work zone in Mecklenburg and Iredell counties.

“We are constantly looking for ways to make every work zone safer,” said Lacy. “This site was in very good condition, but there are some improvements that can make it even better.”

In response to concerns from drivers, March 27-28, the engineers drove through the 26-mile work zone unannounced at various times of the day and night to review the area and observe conditions both at peak and non-peak travel times.

The review includes several recommendations, which will be implemented by the local NCDOT division and contractor. They include:

  • Removing some signs not required for the current traffic pattern;
  • Installing signs “Begin Work Zone” signs at the project limits;
  • Adding signs at on-ramps at major interchanges (I-277, I-85, I-485);
  • Replacing covers on signs that have been torn;
  • Installing “Work Zone” plaques on all speed limit signs, which will reinforce to drivers they are still in a work zone; and
  • Installing raised pavement markings.

Some of the changes can be implemented within the next week, while others require ordering signs and will take a little longer. All recommendations will be implemented within the next month.

Safety engineers will review the work zone again in three to six months. The full report is available online.

April marks Work Zone Awareness Month. As a reminder, NCDOT asks drivers to also do their part to keep themselves and others safe on the road by following these tips:

  • PUT DOWN YOUR CELL PHONE;
  • Pay close attention and expect the unexpected;
  • Watch out for changing traffic patterns, workers and their equipment; and
  • Don’t tailgate.
