CSX Issues Statement After Train Carrying Corn Feed Derails in Cleveland County
UPDATE: CSX has issued the following statement regarding Tuesday’s derailment:
“CSX personnel are on the scene of a derailment, which occurred around 10:30 a.m. today near Airport Road in Cleveland County, N.C. Preliminary reports indicate three rail cars carrying grain are overturned and there were no injuries. Local law enforcement quickly responded to the area and are detouring traffic at Airport Road as a safety precaution. CSX appreciates the assistance of these local officers and we apologize to our neighbors in Cleveland County for this inconvenience. We are coordinating closely with the North Carolina Department of Transportation and will work quickly and safely to fully restore this area. SHELBY, N.C. — Emergency officials confirm a train carrying corn feed in Cleveland County has derailed. It happened on Airport Road just before 11 a.m. We are told the train was headed to a nearby feed plant when several cars derailed.
No injuries have been reported.
Airport road will remain closed while emergency crews work to clean up the spill. The road is expected to reopen at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
