CHARLOTTE, NC — On Tuesday, the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners voted to cancel an agreement with the City of Charlotte regarding police service to unincorporated areas.
The agreement provided police service to roughly 60,000 residents who do not live in the city or towns. Those residents were charged a separate law enforcement service district tax, which was paid to the City, to cover the services provided by CMPD.
The decision requires a 14-month advance notification, according to County Manager Dena R. Diorio, and will allow the County to explore other policing options for those areas during that time.
The change is scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2018.
