Police Charge 13-Year-Old Boy in South Charlotte Sexual Assaults

CHARLOTTE, NC – A 13-year-old boy is charged with two sexual assaults in South Charlotte.

Investigators are calling the attacks some of the most brazen they’ve ever seen.

One of them left neighbors in the Collingwood area shaken.. a random attack on a 24-year-old woman as she walked along Murrayhill Road around 6:00 one night last January.

“Pretty drastic. Stuff like that normally doesn’t happen around here,” says South Charlotte resident Bill Kreiling.

He lives right down from where it happened.

Monday he and his neighbors learned CMPD charged a 13-year-old boy with the crime.

Police say the teen pushed the woman to the ground and fondled her.

She told investigators he ran away when she screamed.

“This is about as brazen an attack as we normally see,” explains Lt. Melanie Peacock, with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

The teen’s name is not being released because he’s so young.

But detectives say the 13-year-old is also responsible for a second sexual assault nearby earlier in January.

Investigators say he attacked a 17-year-old woman as she left the laundry room at an apartment complex on Brookrun Drive.

He ran away when another person showed up.

Police didn’t have a great description of the suspect but were able to use other evidence to connect him to the crimes.

“We were able to get that juvenile suspect’s DNA sample, which we sent to our crime lab to be compared to our case. and got a match,” Peacock says.
Investigators say they were surprised when they learned the suspect is so young.

“Unfortunately in this day and age we can’t discount the possibility. Offenders are getting younger and younger,” Peacock says.

Investigators believe the teen may also be responsible for a series of robberies in the same area.

He’ll likely be charged as a juvenile but police tells WCCB Charlotte it’s too early to say for sure.
