NC Corrections Officer Dies After Assault By Inmate

WINDSOR, NC — A 29-year-old female sergeant at Bertie Correctional Institution died after an assault by an inmate Wednesday evening.

Officials say Sergeant Megan Callahan died around 6:20pm after an assault that occurred around about an hour earlier. Bertie CI medical staff and local first responders attempted life saving measures, according to officials, but were unsuccessful.

Craig Wissink, an inmate at Bertie CI, is being investigated for the incident. Wissink is serving a life sentence after being convicted of First Degree Murder in Cumberland County back in 2004.

“I am deeply saddened and send my heartfelt sympathies to Sergeant Callahan’s family,” said Public Safety Secretary Erik A. Hooks. “We will do all we can to support her family as well as the correctional family. The department will cooperate fully with the law enforcement investigation as well as conduct its own internal investigation.”

The SBI is being brought in to investigate Sergeant Callahan’s death. Officials say Callahan was hired in January 2012, and was promoted to sergeant in February 2016.
