‘Widen I-77’ Group Protests Toll Lane Construction

CORNELIUS, NC — Construction is well underway, but one local group isn’t giving up their fight to stop the I-77 toll lanes. A couple dozen people protested Friday night on the Exit 28 overpass in Cornelius.

The anti-toll group Widen I-77 organized the rally. Opponents say the project is unconstitutional, and construction is making the road dangerous to drive.

“It’s a frustration because you see what the traffic is like, but because of all the debris on the highway, I don’t even drive it,” said Cornelius resident Cindy Kincaid. “I have to take side roads because it’s so dangerous right now.”

Widen I-77 sued to stop construction, but a judge in Charlotte dismissed the case last year. Widen I-77 appealed, and the group says we should know how the appeals court will rule next month.
