Mother Of Teen Accused Of Killing 14-Year-Old In Mount Holly Charged With Accessory

MOUNT HOLLY, N.C. — Police say the mother of a teen accused of killing a 14-year-old at a park in Mount Holly has been arrested for helping her son flee to Ohio.

Laquita Garrett, 38, of Charlotte has been charged with accessory after the fact to a felony.  Police say Garrett knowingly assisted Combs in escaping detection, arrest and punishment by helping Combs flee to Ohio to avoid facing charges in the shooting death of Taylor Smith.

Combs and another teen, Darvon Fletcher, are both facing murder charges for shooting and killing Smith at a park in Mount Holly on March 3rd.

18-year-old Fletcher has a criminal record dating back to 2015 in Charlotte.  He was arrested twice in March of this year.  One of those arrests happened at Northlake Mall in Charlotte.  Detectives say Fletcher was armed when he was caught shoplifting at the mall and then assaulted multiple people. He was found hiding in some nearby woods.
