Neighbors React After Toddler Drowns In East Charlotte Creek

CHARLOTTE, NC — The tragedy happened just off of Sugar Creek Road Wednesday afternoon.

The family is mourning right now and asked for privacy dealing with this devastating loss.

Yolanda Jones, a neighbor, says, “It’s sad, it’s really sad. The one year old, I don’t know what I’d do if that was my child.”

Neighbors living near Terrybrook Drive in east Charlotte say they’re devastated after hearing a one year old little boy drowned in a stream behind their homes off Sugar Creek Road.

“I see a lot of kids all the time over there, I see her a lot, but I never seen a creek over there. I never knew there was a creek over there.”

Police say the boy was at his home with a caregiver not the parents, and playing with other kids when the tragedy happened.

Major Smathers says, “Somehow got separated from their adult caregiver and other children, went to the rear of this residence, fell into a body of water which appears to be a creek.”

Crews tried CPR and took him to CMC but it was too late.

Neighbors say just a reminder you can’t take your eyes of kids for one minute.

“I’m going to go see exactly where it is, let my daughter know where it is, let my daughter know about it, and keep an eye on my grandchild,” said Yolanda.

CMPD is investigating the incident.
