Second Driver Charged In Southeast Charlotte Fatal Wreck

UPDATE: Police have arrested and charged Justin Farruggia, 33, for his involvement in a fatal southeast Charlotte accident last week.

According to investigators, Farruggia was going 66mph in a 45mph zone on Monroe Road when he hit another vehicle. The collision pushed that vehicle into the oncoming lane, colliding with Barbara Dennis. Dennis was pronounced dead at the scene.

Farruggia turned himself into police Wednesday and was charged with Misdemeanor Death by Vehicle and Careless and Reckless Driving.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.  — CMPD has charged a driver in a fatal wreck that happened Thursday afternoon in southeast Charlotte.

The accident happened shortly before 5pm on Monroe Road near Orchard Lake Drive. Officials say Barbara Dennis, 71, was pronounced dead at the scene and 4 others were taken to Novant Health Matthews with non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators say Dennis was not wearing a seatbelt.  William Graham Jr., 68, is facing misdemeanor death by motor vehicle charges in the case.  He is accused of pulling out in front of Dennis’ vehicle.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash to call Detective Oberer at 704-432-2169.

CMPD had the area closed in both directions for several hours, but the road has since reopened.
