CMS School Board Votes to Pass Phase 2 of Student Assignment Plan

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Last night, the CMS school board voted to roll out phase 2 in the 2018-2019 school year.

It took members six and a half hours to debate 14 motions, with parents proposing changes up to the last minute.

Phase 2 of the student assignment plan is estimated to impact more than 7,000 students in 45 different schools. The plan will pair elementary schools to increase diversity as well as increase magnet seats in the district by more than 4,200 in hopes to give families more choices.

Frustrated parents in Dilworth managed to convince the school board to adjust pairing Dilworth and Sedgefield elementary schools.

Cotswold and Billingsville elementary schools would also move K-2nd grade to one school and grades 3-5th to another.

The new plan will also cause Morehead Stem to go from full to partial magnet in a pairing with Nathaniel Alexander.

Both the current and incoming superintendent say the new plan is solid.
