Overflow Crowd for Murdered Charlotte Uber Driver’s Funeral

CHARLOTTE, NC – An overflow crowd as family, friends, and strangers pay their final respects to a murdered Charlotte Uber driver.

They’re remembering Marlo Medina-Chevez as a loving, hard-working man.

“He was a really nice man. I mean, with everyone. A lovely man,” says Amelia Garcia.

She knew Marlo Medina-Chevez.

They often talked while waiting to pick up Uber customers at the airport.

Now she wants justice to be served against the two men charged with his murder.

“It’s very sad. I hope they pay for this,” Garcia says.

The story touched others in the community too.

Jeanne Kennedy with Mothers of Murdered Offspring handed out pins with Medina-Chevez’s picture.

“Some of them don’t speak English, but when you hand them that picture, you don’t say anything. They know it’s for their loved one,” Kennedy says.

Medina-Chevez told his family he didn’t want a sad funeral.

People were asked to wear bright colors.

“A celebration. This is not a black mourning dress. It’s a celebration for the fact that he was here. We’re sad that he’s gone, but you celebrate the time that he was here,” Kennedy says.

But it will still be difficult for Medina-Chevez’s family.

He and his wife Elsa were married more than 20 years, and he was the sole provider.

It’s also tough for Uber drivers like Garcia who say they’re rethinking where they work.

“I’m going to avoid a few areas because can be very dangerous, especially in the night,” she says.
