CMPD Investigates Four Murders over Memorial Day Weekend

CHARLOTTE, NC – Detectives are investigating after one of the deadliest holiday weekends in Charlotte in years.

Four murders in four days, and so far there’s only one arrest.

The latest homicide marks 36 this year in Charlotte. That’s more than double the 17 murders the city had at this point last year.

There were tense moments for officers after someone started firing at Rozzells Ferry Road and Oregon Street in Northwest Charlotte.

The shots going off as Detectives investigated Charlotte’s 36th homicide of the year Monday night.

“We’re still trying to determine if there was a specific target for those shots being fired, or if it was just someone who decided to let off some rounds,” says CMPD Captain Cecil Brisbon.

So far police have no leads in the case.

The first murder happened Friday night in the Presley Apartments on East Stonewall Street in Uptown.

The second happened in a grocery store parking lot on Docia Crossing Road in University City.

And the third happened early Monday morning at the Travel Inn on Reagan Drive in Northeast Charlotte.

Police have made an arrest in the Uptown murder.

They have suspects in two other cases.

“It’s, uh, hard to digest that it could happen that rapidly in a weekend,” says Rayshaun Green with Dream Team for Peace.

Greene says the killing is senseless.

Three of the four victims are young men between the ages of 18 and 24.

“It hurts. Hurts for being the ages so young,” Greene says.

His group will hold a march and vigil Thursday night at the scene of the last murder.

Police say the two biggest issues they’re seeing: repeat offenders and people resolving disputes with a gun.

“We are seeing way too much disregard for human life,” says CMPD Deputy Chief Johnny Jennings.
