NEWTON, NC — Officials have confirmed two more cases of rabies, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to three this year.
According to reports, a fox tested positive for rabies on June 9 and a raccoon tested positive on May 25.
Officials say the fox bit a man outside his home on Sherrills Ford Road on June 7, and the racoon got into a fight with a dog near the town of Catawba on May 22. The dog was up to date on its rabies vaccinations, according to officials, and the man was advised to seek medical attention following the attack.
Animal Services reminds residents to have their pets properly vaccinated. The Humane Society of Catawba County’s Newton Office provides one-year vaccinations for $10 year round. You can visit the shelter at 201 Government Services Drive in Newton.
