School Withholds Class President’s Diploma He Refused To Give Their Prepared Speech
CHARLOTTE, NC — A North Carolina high school class president spent two weeks preparing his graduation speech, and was denied his diploma when he gave it.
Tonight was a bitter sweet night…My son Marvin Wright C/O 2017 Sr.President was told at the last minute during practice today that he COULD NOT read his speech after him & his sister completed writing speech 5am today. He was giving a 3 sentence speech to read that was written by someone else.I went to the school today to see what was the problem. What my daughter & I had to say DIDN'T matter to the principle. He waved her off & refuse to talk to her.As a Class President,I always thought you are to sit on stage.MY SON DIDN'T,but Vice-President,Reporter,Secretary,Treasurer,Salutatorian & Valedictorian DID.After presentation of diplomas, which my son was the VERY last one"WRIGHT",He entered the stage with his speech. He did absolutely what was told to him by other staff members, students,& parents.Marvin read HIS speech & it was love by many parents, staff & students…blacks, whites,Hispanics, male, females. After the students exit the bldg after tassle turn going into Auditorium,He WAS NOT given his package.Principle Craig Harris & Senior Advisor Shelton Langley were upset that my son did NOT read the speech they gave him after him & my daughter worked hard all night on that speech when he WAS told from the beginning he HAS to write his own speech.Hmmmm…pissed & I showed out!!Langley puts it on Harris.Harris wouldn't come out his office & acted like he was gone for the night. This is NOT the end!My SON WILL get his Diploma? #2017Graduate #PissedMom #BumpSouthwest #GladMyBoysDone?CONGRATULATIONS 2017 GRADUATES?

The student, Marvin Wright, was told to read a different speech prepared by the administration before the ceremony, but when he got up to deliver it he instead chose to deliver the original one he had prepared. The principal then refused to give the class president his diploma following that decision.
Tonight, the EDGE panel discusses the decision made on both sides of the issue.
