Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Crimes Against Children Unit have charged Maggie Dixon, with the attempted murder of her 1-year-old son.
On June 18, 2017, Providence Division Officers responded to Carolinas Medical Center Levine Children’s Hospital in reference to a child abuse call for service. Upon arrival, officers were informed that the suspect, Maggie Dixon, had been alone in a hospital room with her 1-year-old son. Hospital staff were alerted to abnormalities in the victim’s vital signs and fluctuations in the victim’s breathing pattern via monitors. Hospital staff checked on the infant and then observed Dixon on video surveillance attempting to suffocate the infant. Dixon was immediately removed from the room by hospital staff and officers arrived on scene shortly thereafter. Dixon agreed to be voluntarily transported to police headquarters to speak with detectives in reference to the incident.
Crimes Against Children Detectives responded to both the hospital and police headquarters to conduct the investigation. At the conclusion of the interview, Dixon was arrested and charged with one count of Attempted 1st Degree Murder and one count of Felony Child Abuse Inflicting Serious Bodily Injury. Dixon was subsequently transported to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office where she remains in custody.
The infant remains in the care of CMC Levine Children’s Hospital and other family members. The Department of Social Services will be assisting with the investigation.
