Roy Cooper Plans to Veto State Budget

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — North Carolina’s $23 billion spending plan is in jeopardy this morning.

Governor Roy Cooper plans to veto the budget because he believes it short changes education and the economy to give the wealthy tax breaks.

The budget provides $700 million more in funding for public education, including a 3.3% teacher raise. It also lowers the personal income tax rate.

Cooper stated, “If after my veto, the legislature would make a handful of simple but important changes I would sign the budget even though there are many other provisions that I don’t like.”

The General Assembly is expected to override the Governor’s veto.

The State’s fiscal year starts Saturday.
