Topgolf Postpones Plans For Possible Location In University City
UPDATE: Topgolf officials say they are putting plans on hold for building a new location in the University City area.
A spokesman for the company issued the following statement Friday afternoon:
“We remain excited about Topgolfβs potential to expand to the north Charlotte area, but we have decided to put on hold our plans for a location on West Mallard Creek Church Road. To ensure we choose the best possible site for the community and our business, we want to carefully explore all options available. In the meantime, we appreciate the cityβs support and look forward to creating great times for our Guests at the recently opened Topgolf Charlotte venue.”
The announcement comes just days after a historian confirmed rumors of a slave burial site at Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church near the proposed location.

CHARLOTTE, NC – More than 100 neighbors in the University City area marched Saturday night to protest a proposed golf entertainment complex.
They’re worried about noise, bright lights, and traffic if Topgolf builds a location off Mallard Creek Church Road.
It would also include restaurants, retail, and nearly 400 apartments on a 65-acre plot near I-85 and Mallard Creek Church Road.
“They’re telling us that there will be no impact on our neighborhood and we don’t believe that,” says neighbor Linda Majchrzar.
Neighbors say they knew the area would be developed but say they were expecting single family homes – not the golf entertainment complex that’s proposed.
“Topgolf will be practically in our backyards,” Majchrzar says.
They say similar Topgolf locations stay open until Midnight during the week and 2:00 am on weekends.
A Topgolf Senior Manager sent WCCB Charlotte a statement that reads in part..
“..we are confident we can address their concerns, and in the end, be a great neighbor who puts a lot of effort in having a positive community impact.”
“Topgolf has said that they’re willing to work with neighborhoods where they put their facilities. And yet no one from Topgolf has ever contacted our group at all,” Majchzar says.
Neighbors hope the march will get the attention of City Council members who they fear will vote against them.
“I think that we raised a lot of concerns that City Council is taking into consideration but I’m not sure they’re hearing us loud and clear. And I hope that this demonstration walk will send that message,” says neighbor Xavier Harrison.
