CHARLOTTE, NC — A Charlotte area man accused of lying to the feds during a terror investigation was arrested and had his first appearance before a judge Thursday.

According to court documents, in July 2014 Alexander Smith contacted who he thought was an ISIS representative but was actually an FBI agent. Smith talked about his desire to join ISIS, and said that he wanted to buy a buddy pass for an individual to fly from Tampa Bay to Syria.

A federal indictment filed last week shows the buddy pass was purchased by his girlfriend in March of 2015.

Smith was interviewed by the FBI in January and February of 2016 about his desire to join ISIS and the purchase of that buddy pass. During those interviews, investigators say Smith lied about his intentions to join and fight with ISIS as well as the plans to travel to Syria.
