People Want Answers After Animal Shelter Euthanizes 4-Month-Old Puppy

ANSON COUNTY, NC — Animal lovers are furious after the Anson County Animal Shelter euthanized a four-month-old puppy Tuesday.

“Shayla” was surrendered by her owner last week, and reportedly bit one of the workers while at the shelter. The worker allowed a local rescue volunteer to take the dog, but county leaders wanted her quarantined.

Shayla was reclaimed and then euthanized Tuesday. Officials say her remains are being sent to Raleigh for rabies testing.

When asked about what documentation the shelter has on the incident, the county attorney says he does not know of any. WCCB has reached out to formally request any shelter documentation that may exist including a bite report, the shelter’s policy for handling possibly diseased or dangerous dogs, seizure paperwork, and chain of custody paperwork.

Rabies test results are expected this Thursday.
