Repairs On Last Friday’s Huge Sewage Spill To Begin Tomorrow

CHARLOTTE, NC — Repairs on the cause of last week’s huge sewage spill in south Charlotte are expected to begin Friday, according to the city manager.

Charlotte Water says the estimates for how much sewage was spilled have increased from 180,000 to over 201,000 gallons. That sewage spilled into Kings Branch, which flows into Sugar Creek, and then the Catawba River from Farmhurst Road last Friday.

State health officials have been conducting tests on the river’s water periodically over the past week. According to results from Tuesday’s sample, officials say bacteria levels are still above normal.

DHEC says the no swimming advisories are staying in place for now at areas like Riverwalk, Landsford Canal and Catawba Indian reservations. New samples were taken today and results are expected to be back late tomorrow.

DHEC will determine if the advisories can be lifted before the weekend based on those results.
