Huntersville Woman Charged After Puppy Was Found Dead From Neglect

HUNTERSVILLE, NC — A 38-year-old woman faces a cruelty to animals charge after her dog was found dead from neglect Sunday afternoon.

Police say they were called about a puppy being left in an outdoor kennel, in extremely hot conditions, with no water just before 12:30pm. According to reports, the puppy was dead when police arrived.

After an investigation, Shannon Naldony was charged with Misdemeanor Cruelty to Animals.

Officials are reminding pet owners to take the following steps and precautions to keep pets safe during periods of hot weather:

  • Protect your pet from the sun’s rays by providing plenty of shade
  • Keep them hydrated by ensuring they have access to fresh water
  • Never leave a pet in a vehicle, not even with the windows cracked
  • Avoid asphalt, if it’s too hot for bare feet it’s too hot for bare paws
  • Don’t let playful pets over exert themselves by limiting their exercise in the heat
  • Be able to recognize the signs of heat stroke and seek veterinary attention immediately if exhibited. Some signs to look for are:
    • Excessive Panting
    • Weakness
    • Drooling
    • Lethargy
    • Vomiting
    • Dark Red Gums
    • Incoordination
    • Rapid Heart Beat
    • Seizures
