Defense Says Vurnel Smith, Jr. Went Into ‘Blackout,’ Doesn’t Remember Double Murder

CHARLOTTE, NC — The man accused of kidnapping and assaulting his wife and then murdering her parents faced a judge Wednesday morning.

Vurnel Smith, Jr.’s wife says she was attacked by Smith last Tuesday inside her home on Red Clay Lane in north Charlotte. She says he held her captive for a day and a half and repeatedly assaulted her. When she was able to get free she drove to CMC University.

Police later found her father dead in the trunk of her car, and her mother dead inside the family’s home.

Smith turned himself in Tuesday afternoon to police. His attorney says that Smith went into a ‘blackout’ and doesn’t remember what happened.
