Sewage Spill at Park Road Park Pond Makes Water Unsafe

CHARLOTTE, NC– Park Road Park is a popular spot for fishing, and gathering, like this family reunion right by the pond.      Charlotte- Mecklenburg Storm Water Services says nearly a thousand gallons of sewage spilled from the park bathrooms.

” It entered the pond there at the park from a manhole which overflowed and as a result of that we obviously don’t want people coming into contact with the water,” said Rusty Rozzelle with Storm Water Services.

Rozzelle says they’ve removed the feces out of the water but the bacteria will take days to clear out, so no one or their pets should touch or drink the water through the weekend.

“In human waste which is what it was, there are potential pathogens or disease carrying organisms,” said Rozzelle.

The county put up signs telling people not get into or fish in the water, but some say, they weren’t very clear.

“I just thought they didn’t want us to fish I didn’t know it was because of what’s happening that’s nasty what’s going on, “said Steele Creek resident, Krystal Negron.

Families with pets and kids playing around say they’re glad we told them cause anyone could have used the water to clean off something without knowing the danger.

“That’s good information to know , cause you know sometimes kids run off and you never know, they could put their hands in the water, things happen fairly quickly,” said Columbia resident, Pam Haywood.

Storm Water Services say they have cleaned all the feces out but it will take the bacteria days to filter out so at Monday the earliest and they will let the public and media know when it is safe.
