No Swimming Advisory Issued For A Lake Norman Cove After Raw Sewage Spill

CHARLOTTE, NC – A NO-SWIMMING advisory was issued today for a cove on Lake Norman near 16833 Jetton Road in Cornelius.

The advisory was issued after approximately 200 gallons of raw sewage was discharged into the lake (via a storm water pipe) from a spill that occurred Tuesday at 18803 Harbor Light Boulevard. The spill resulted from a broken wastewater pipe which was repaired earlier today by Charlotte Water.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services issued this advisory and are conducting sampling in the cove. The advisory and sampling will continue until levels are determined to be safe for swimming.

“A majority of wastewater overflows can be prevented with your help,” said Cam Coley, spokesperson at Charlotte Water. “Anything put in plumbing or a manhole can cause wastewater overflows, spilling raw sewage into your street, your creek or even inside your own home. Even products labeled as ‘flushable’ do not breakdown in the sewer system and can contribute to clogging.”
