Charlotte Faith Groups Collecting Donations for Texas Flood Victims

CHARLOTTE– “Even though we aren’t in Houston we knew we could be part of what’s going on, what’s happening,” said Freedom House Church Senior Pastor, Penny Maxwell.

The donations are coming in. Freedom House Church has received donated supplies from water to baby wipes at five Charlotte locations including here in South End. They have trucks heading to Houston and they’re also collecting money online.

“One hundred percent of what comes in whether it’s financially or whether it’s good received goes directly to Houston, we don’t have any overhead,” said Maxwell.

Charlotte’s largest Catholic parish, St. Matthew, sent an email to its parishioners asking for donations to give to Catholic churches in Houston to disperse to the most in need. Many faith organizations are doing the same, including Temple Beth El at Shalom Park.

“The desire to help out outstrips the mechanisms but ultimately the mechanisms will catch up and we’re realizing the best way to help out right now is to donate money,” said Rabbi Asher Knight.

Rabbi Knight says their counterparts in Houston will disperse the money.

“There is a serious need for even just something as simple as gift cards because people need to buy clothes and they don’t even have access to the banks,” said Rabbi Knight.

Faith leaders are asking everyone to help in some way.

“If people want to go, if people want to give or if people say hey I can’t do either of those but I can pray, any of those are fine ways to help people,” said Maxwell.
