Identities Released In Gastonia Chase And Crash That Killed Bank Robbery Suspect

Police have identified both suspects involved in the high speed chase that ended with a deadly crash, which killed a suspected bank robber, in Gastonia.

Authorities say Erin Morgan Clark, 25, of Gastonia was driving at the time of the crash, and Stuart Maratuech, 54, was in the passenger seat. Maratuech was pronounced dead on the scene. Clark was taken to CMC in stable condition.

Maratuech was the primary suspect in an armed robbery at PNC Bank on New Hope Road, according to authorities, where $1,380 was stolen. Officials say there are conflicting stories about Clark’s involvement in the robbery and the decision to flee. Charges against her are pending.

The investigation is still ongoing.

GASTONIA, NC — Officials say a man believed to have been the primary suspect in a bank robbery died after crashing during a high speed chase Wednesday afternoon.

The accident happened on Crowders Creek Road at Highway 321. Officials say officers spotted the suspect vehicle and attempted a stop before they took off. The suspects were going about 80mph, according to authorities, when they ran a red light and hit a minivan.

Officials say a woman and her two grandchildren where inside the van. None of them were injured.

The suspect was wanted for an armed robbery that happened around 4:35pm at the PNC Bank on New Hope Road.

Officials say the man killed is believed to be the primary suspect. The woman driving the suspect vehicle was taken to CaroMont Regional Medical Center with injuries and then transferred to CMC.
