SALISBURY, N.C. — A Rowan County teacher has been charged with a sex crime involving a student.

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office began investigating after receiving a complaint from the family of an Erwin Middle School student.

Investigators discovered thousands of messages exchanged between Dexter and the juvenile over an eight day span, dating back to September 9, 2017.

Messages were obtained from Dexter’s and the victim’s phones, and from Facebook.

The evidence collected indicated Dexter intended for the student to visit his home, but that no meeting had occurred yet.

Records show Dexter was sending messages to the female student while still at school from his personal cell phone.  The juvenile was not a student of Dexter but was known to him at the school.

Dexter admitted to exchanging messages with the juvenile when confronted by detectives.

He is being held at the Rowan County Detention Center on a $150,000 secured bond.

The investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be pending.
