CMPD Says Man Shot After Holding Pregnant Woman At Gunpoint

CHARLOTTE, NC — Police say a home invasion suspect has life threatening injuries after an officer-involved shooting in northwest Charlotte.

Police say officers responded to an armed home invasion on Holly Street near Beatties Ford Road Monday night where a suspect, later identified as Johnathan Autry, was reportedly holding a pregnant woman at gunpoint. Chief Putney spoke at the scene and says the officers perceived an imminent threat and shot the suspect after the woman was able to create a slight separation between herself and the suspect.

Autry was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries, according to officials, and the woman was transported for evaluation as a precaution. Autry is listed in critical but stable condition. He is currently being treated for his injuries and will be transported to the Mecklenburg County Jail upon discharge.

He will be charged with 1st Degree Burglary, 1st Degree Kidnapping, Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and Possession of a Firearm by Convicted Felon. Autry also has three outstanding warrants from another county related to Driving With License Revoked, Resisting A Public Officer, and Speeding charges.

Police say they determined that this family was not randomly targeted.  They went on to say although the victim and suspect were unknown to one another, the gunman used the name of the victim’s husband when demanding the family’s money.  The husband was not home at the time of the crime.

Officials say they did recover a gun at the scene. CMPD says “all officers okay” but two have been taken to the hospital to be checked out as a precaution.

The officers who fired their service weapons have been identified as Officer Shon Sheffield, Officer Joseph Bauer and Officer James Tindall. All the officers have been placed on administrative leave.

Officer Sheffield has been employed with the CMPD since August 13, 2012, and is currently assigned to the Metro Division. Officer Bauer has been employed with the CMPD since October 21, 2013, and is currently assigned to the Metro Division. Officer Tindall has been employed with the CMPD since October 26, 2015, and is currently assigned to the Metro Division.

Witnesses indicate a second suspect – a short, heavyset black male wearing dark clothing – fled before police arrived.  No other details have been released at this time.
