CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Kevin Olsen left the Mecklenburg County jail Monday afternoon after posting bond, holding hands with his dad, dressed in a red shirt and grey pants, that tell-tale Olsen blonde hair, tucked under a camo-patterned baseball hat. Looks and last name, perhaps the only similarities between Kevin and his older brother, Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen.

Kevin, charged now with three counts of second degree forcible rape, second degree sex offense, assault on a female and cyberstalking. This, after a night with a 23-year-old woman with whom Olsen had an on-going relationship. Prosecutors claim she and Olsen were out together Saturday and then separated. They say Olsen sent her a text message, threatening to kill her.

The two allegedly met back up and took an Uber to an off campus residence, on Sidney Crest Avenue in northeast Charlotte. Prosecutors say the assault then happened inside a bedroom. Olsen, now represented by high-profile criminal defense attorney George Laughrun. Laughrun declined to provide a public statement about the charges his client faces, other than to say they deny 99 percent of the allegations.

Olsen has been in trouble before. He left the University of Miami in 2014 after reportedly more than one suspension, as well as DUI and fake or stolen ID charges. He transferred to Towson in Maryland and was then thrown off the team in 2015 for violating team rules. He landed at Riverside City College in California, before UNC-Charlotte took him on in December 2015.

Last April, Olsen told WCCB Charlotte he had moved past those issues: “The troubles that I have gotten myself into, I’ve moved past that. My parents have been here for three years, since I’ve left high school, so, you know, it’s going pretty good,” Olsen said. Now, UNC-Charlotte 49ers Head Coach Brad Lambert says, “In light of his arrest, we can let you know that Kevin has been suspended from all athletic activities.”

Next for Kevin Olsen is a preliminary hearing in March. Greg Olsen, meantime, we are told, has no comment and has requested privacy at this time.
