Pedestrian Hit By Car And Killed On Independence Blvd

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A man died when he was hit by a car, as he tried to cross Independence Boulevard early Sunday morning.

Officers responded to an accident in the 5600 block of Independence Boulevard at about 2:15 a.m.

Police say Santiago Matias Leon, 45, crossed three inbound traffic lanes, climbed over a concrete barrier and was trying to cross the outbound when he stepped directly into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

Leon was thrown 80 feet from where he was initially hit.

The driver of the car pulled over and did not sustain any injuries. Β Alcohol or speed are not factors for the driver.

Alcohol use is suspected for Leon.

Police say the area of the accident is not marked for pedestrian crossing
