Families Continue to Escape Conditions in Caribbean Following Maria

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Families across the Caribbean are trying to escape the conditions hurricane Maria created.

Charlottean Tara Meek is anxiously waiting for her loved ones to arrive from the U.S. Virgin Islands.

While she grew-up there, she now calls Charlotte Home. Meek has been trying to get her family out for more than a week.

She tells us her sister and her children boarded a ship, bound to arrive in Florida Tuesday.

Her mother is waiting for a flight but the airport on St. Croix is still closed.

“When some neighbors found them the next morning, they were soaking wet, huddled underneath a wet mattress”, stated Meek.

Meek also stated that power on the island might not be restored until December.
