Saundra Adams Speaks to Inmates at Mecklenburg County Jail
CHARLOTTE, NC – Actions — have consequences.
That’s the message Saundra Adams delivered to inmates inside the Mecklenburg County Jail Monday.
“I just want them to know that they can start making better choices,” Adams says.
In 1999, her daughter Cherica, eight-months pregnant with former Panthers wide receiver Rae Carruth’s baby, was shot four times.
Chancellor Adams, now 17-years-old, survived.
As part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the two visited inmates preparing for release, urging them to think before they act.
“Once you plant the seed, whether they act on it right now or not, it’s planted in their hearts,” Adams says.
A jury convicted Carruth of conspiring to kill Cherica Adams.
He’s scheduled to get out of prison just over a year from now.
Adams says she plans to be there with Chancellor when he’s released.
“I don’t want it to be a reminder of the pain that he’s caused us. I want him to see what a fine young man his son has grown up to be,” Adams says.
She says she forgave Carruth a long time ago, not for him but so she could move on.
Now she’s focused on taking care of Chancellor who has cerebral palsy and brain damage.
“He has his athletic build. He’s done so well in that therapy because his dad was so strong and athletic,” she says. “So, I thank Rae Carruth, because without him my grandson would not be who he is. So I thank Rae.”
