Pedestrian Struck and Killed by Vehicle Crossing The Plaza

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police are investigating after a 59-year-old man was struck and killed by a vehicle crossing The Plaza.

On Monday, October 16, 2017 at 12:16 a.m., officers responded to the 1300 block of The Plaza near Central Avenue to investigate a collision involving a motor vehicle which stuck a pedestrian.  Upon arrival, officers located a male pedestrian in the roadway.  MEDIC arrived and began to transport the pedestrian, Charles White, to Carolinas Medical Center-Main, however he was pronounced deceased at 12:32 a.m. while still in transport to the hospital.

Detectives with the CMPD’s Major Crash Unit responded to conduct the investigation.  Their preliminary investigation has revealed that a 2012 GMC SUV, driven by Frank McCorey, was traveling north on The Plaza.  As the GMC entered the 1300 block of The Plaza, the pedestrian, Charles White, entered the roadway and began crossing the street.  As the pedestrian crossed the roadway, he was struck by the GMC. Neither speed or alcohol are contributing factors for the driver of the GMC in this crash.  The pedestrian was wearing dark clothing and was not crossing in a crosswalk at the time of the crash.  It is currently unknown if Mr. White was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the collision.

The crash remains under investigation.  Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Detective Crum at 704-432-2169.  They may also call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600 or visit the Crime Stoppers mobile app website at http://charlottecrimestoppers.com/.
