Couch Chat: Get A Ticket For Catcalling

French women are having their own ‘Me Too’ moment. This morning, a task force created by France’s President is working with police to create a definition of sexual harassment…

This, after France is considering a new law… on the spot fines for catcalling and other forms of street harassment.

French women are using #ExposeYourPig this morning to talk about their own experiences with it. Back here in the U.S. – A survey says 65% of women in the U.S. have been harassed on the street at least once. There isn’t any specific laws for this in North Carolina. However, the group Stop Street Harassment says, it’s illegal to use profane or indecent language on public roads or highways but it doesn’t specifically say sidewalks.

It says if a harasser is loudly using sexual language or profanity and someone with you hears it… you can report them.

Critics say this isn’t a job for local officers, it’s a job for the community and that more people need to speak up when they see something. Should the U.S. do the same as France, and start fining for catcalling?
