One-On-One With Malik Monk

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — WCCB Charlotte’s Ashley Holder sat down with Charlotte Hornets’ rookie Malik Monk to talk about a range of subjects from his draft position to his shooting.

Monk was the 2016-2017  SEC Freshman of the Year and averaged nearly 20 points per game. His four 30 point games were the most by any Kentucky freshman.

Many thought Monk was the best shooter in this year’s NBA draft and expected him to go higher, but he was gift wrapped at number 11 to the Charlotte Hornets.

“You’re always going to be upset when you don’t go number one,” says Monk, “every team that I know passed, we’re going to get them.”

He started with the preseason, notching double digits and over 30 minutes in each of the last three games.

Make no mistake, Malik isn’t afraid to take the last second shots.

“If Kemba not taking the shot I hope I am the next person or if J(eremy) Lamb not taking it I hope I’m the next person.” Monk continued, “I want to take them.”

It helps when you have Dwight Howard and Cody Zeller setting your screens, according to Monk.

“Yes, they get me wide open, wide open.  If their man comes over, I am just dropping it off to them, so it works for both of us.”

While Monk’s elite shooting makes him a nightmare for offenses, it’s his defense that needs work to keep him afloat at the NBA level.

“Every game I am getting better, every day I’m getting better so he(coach Clifford) tells me that everyday.”

Monk looks to showcase his talent to Buzz City fans in the home opener on Friday against the Atlanta Hawks, but he’s unsure about his emotions that night.

“That’s going to be different. I don’t know how I’ll feel but I’ll let you know.”
