Airline Begins Weighing Passengers

One airline is asking passengers to step on a scale before stepping foot on their planes, but not for the reason you may think.

Finnair is now keeping tabs on its passengers’ weight.Β Finland’s largest airline started asking to weigh customers this week.Β The airline launched the program, which will run intermittently into 2018, to get a more accurate picture of the average weights of the men, women and children that fly with the airline. Their carry-on baggage is also being taken into consideration and passengers must carry it onto the scale with them. The weigh-ins are voluntary and anonymous.

About 180 people have volunteered so far, which was more than expected. Finnair is hoping to get a total of about 2,000 weigh-ins from men, women and children. It will conduct the study over the winter and spring, since carry-on baggage and coats tend to be heavier in the winter versus the spring.

Some are now worried that will lead to the airline raising ticket prices for heavier passengers.Β Finnair says that’s not the case.Β The airline will use the information to better calculate fuel costs and determine if it needs to change any safety policies.

So would you let an airline weigh you?
