Investigation After Child Found Locked Out of Daycare

CHARLOTTE, NC – State regulators are investigating after a woman found a child locked out of a daycare in northwest Charlotte. WCCB Charlotte has learned that the daycare has faced several violations in the past.

Tina Quizon says she was walking near Sunshine Kids Learning Academy on Wednesday when she heard a child crying. The daycare off Ingle Street is right across from interstate 485.

“I see this little toddler, little fella, maybe 2 years old,” said Quizon. “Crying, pounding on the door, trying to reach up and open the doors, and there’s no one out there. No one.”

WCCB Charlotte called the owner and tried to talk to the administrator of Sunshine Kids Learning Academy. Neither would comment.

Records from the State Division of Child Development and Early Education show inspectors found several violations during unannounced visits over the past year. The most recent include not completing a criminal background check on an employee and lack of safety training.
