Infant Dies In Head On Collision Near Uptown Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A 14-month-old girl has died following a two-car accident, just north of Uptown, in Charlotte.

The accident happened around 9 a.m., in the 1500 block of Graham Street on Wednesday morning.

The CMPD says Dora Del Carmen Sosa, 33, was traveling north on Graham Street behind a large truck. Sosa attempted to pass the truck and when she changed lanes, she encountered a stopped pick-up truck, waiting to make a left turn.  She then swerved into oncoming traffic and collided head on with a vehicle driven by, 43-year-old, David John Collins Jr.

Sosa and Collins were transported to CMC-Main with serious injuries.  Sosa’s 14-month-old daughter was also taken to CMC-Main with life threatening injuries, where she later died.

Investigators believe the infant carrier was not being used as designed and did not provide proper restraint, which was a factor in the child’s death.

Police said speed and alcohol are not factors in the crash.

The case is still under investigation and charges are pending.
