As NCDOT Crews Work To Clear Roads, Iredell County Residents React To The Heavy Snowfall

IREDELL COUNTY, NC — North Carolina Department of Transportation crews are working around the clock as snow continues to pound several area counties.

In Statesville, puddles of sludge coat I-77 in Iredell County. Blankets of snow are covering trees and grass. NCDOT is in full force with 20 DOT plow trucks clearing the roads, plus 16 contractor plow trucks. Their advice, to stay inside, and some Statesville residents had that very idea in mind.

As the snow falls quietly on Wall Street in Statesville, residents Tiffany Vinson and Brock Meech sit in their home. Cozying up with hot chocolate, in festive pj’s. Ready for a winter wonderland.

“Watching TV, Netflix, and then we got pizza and we’re pretty much going to chill inside and I got these lovely pajamas,” says Tiffany Vinson.

Not far, cars were inching through sludge on I-77. Iredell, Alexander, Gaston, and several other county dispatchers are all telling us similar stories of slick roads, countless wrecks, and slide-offs

But even so, it’s not stopping Deonte Miller, who also lives in Statesville, from taking a stroll in the blizzard. He was just bummed he had to go to work.

“It started snowing… I was at work and at first, I was like yes, we’re about to get off early, we’re about to go home. But not. It wasn’t like that,” says Miller.

In Statesville, several businesses closed their doors early because of the weather.

NCDOT Division 12, which covers Iredell, Gaston, Cleveland, Alexandra, Catawba, and Union counties have 12,000 tons of salt on hand and in total, 120 NCDOT trucks working the roads.
