Hit and Run Downs Power Lines On E Independence Blvd

CHARLOTTE, NC– On Monday, Matthews Police received a report of a hit and run on Hwy. 74 near Sam Newell Rd.

The suspect vehicle that fled the scene was described as a small white vehicle. At approximately 6:05 a.m., a call was received with a report of a white Chevrolet HHR that had just crashed into a utility pole on Sam Newell Rd. near Crestdale Middle School.

Upon Officers arrival, they were able to identify this as the suspect vehicle from the recent Hit & Run.

The driver and only occupant who was identified as Mr. Albert Louis Cuevas, was taken into custody and charged with Hit & Run and DWI.

Mr. Cuevas was transported to Novant Matthews to receive treatment for non-life threatening injuries, and will then be transported to the Mecklenburg County Jail for processing once he is released. It was also found that Mr. Cuevas had 12 outstanding warrants to include several Assault on a Female charges, and assault with a Deadly Weapon.

The roadway has been closed since this incident while Duke Energy repairs the power lines and utility pole. The roadway is expected to be reopened this morning between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. and should not have an impact on afternoon traffic.
