Man Facing Murder Charge After Deadly Wreck In West Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, NC — Police are investigating an accident that left one person dead Monday night in west Charlotte.
The accident happened just before 7pm on Little Rock Road near I-85. Police say Adelbert Redo was driving a 2009 Lexus LS460 northbound on I-85 when a Highway Patrol Trooper conducted a traffic stop for speeding.
During the traffic stop, Redo resisted arrest and attempted to get back into the Lexus and leave. He drove away from the traffic stop and started to drag the trooper, who was trying to detain him. The Lexus sped away northbound on I-85. The trooper did not engage in a pursuit.
Redo exited at Little Rock Road driving at a high rate of speed, lost control of the vehicle and left the roadway. His Lexus went airborne across the southbound lanes of Little Rock Road and landed as it struck a Cadillac Escalade and an Audi Q5. The Lexus then struck a Chrysler Town and Country van, driven by Teresa Villanueva Ortuna, who was traveling northbound on Little Rock Road.
After striking the van, Redo exited his vehicle and fled the scene on foot. An off-duty State Trooper witnessed the crash and chased Redo on foot, apprehending him several blocks from the crash scene. The investigation determined Redo was impaired by an alcoholic beverage. MEDIC transported the driver and two passengers of the Chrysler minivan to Carolinas Medical Center-Main. Teresa Villanueva Ortuna was pronounced deceased while in transit to CMC. The passengers of the minivan were admitted with serious injuries. The drivers and the passenger of the other vehicles were not injured.
The CMPD Major Crash Unit Detectives interviewed witnesses at the scene. The suspect was interviewed at CMPD Headquarters. Detectives charged Adelbert Kevin Redo with Second Degree Murder, Felony Hit and Run, 2 counts of Felony Serious Injury by Vehicle, Driving While Impaired, and Reckless Driving.
